So as many of you know by now, Thermal Expansion no long uses MJs but now uses RF, Redstone Flux, which does at least convert to MJ and back apparently but at a ratio of 10:1.

What are you guys' thoughts on ANOTHER new power system?

Personally I miss blutricity, it just was better named and made using it more fun lol... but ehh... blutricity was kinda bothersome to manage...

What do you mean with "another new power system" - RF or yet another new one? Well, let me say this - all other power systems I've seen so far were quite different from each other, except maybe for Universal Electricity (which is similar to IC2) and Factroization (which is similar to Blutricity). However RF is plain unnecessary in my opinion. It works exactly the same as MJ in conduits and energy cells, even the dynamos work exactly like MJ engines. It can even be used as MJ. So why create a new power system? I'm not aware of a single advantage of RF over MJ, except that MJ cannot be transported in conduits and energy cells anymore and that RF is the only way to power Thermal Expansion machines. Both of these "advantages" would also be the case for MJ if RF didn't exist, like back in 1.5.

Guru Meditation FTW. I would really appreciate it if gurus would meditate elsewhere. There are so many places that are way better for meditiation than these forums. There probably are even sites dedicated to guru meditation. Why meditate here then?

I mean we already had several and now there is one more, RF.

To be fair I find several different kinds of power to be unnecessary, two is too much but is bearable but MORE than two?! Come on...
I mean sure you can add flavor saying that the two power systems are different because of the way they are created and etc, but more than two is not needed ever.

It works exactly the same as MJ in conduits and energy cells, even the dynamos work exactly like MJ engines. It can even be used as MJ. So why create a new power system?

Everyone else had a power system, TE's dev likely felt left out.

What?

Then you fail to understand the annoyance of having to have SEVERAL different kinds of power collecting systems to get a single base running.

As I understand it, the TE devs did not approve of the changes made to the Buildcraft power system, which in larger builds is coded in such a way that can be very lag-inducing. Thus, they made their own power system.

I think it takes more work to get every single mod ever that uses power to use a single power system than creating several power systems in-game.

Besides, Power Converters.

Besides, UE.

To be honest I like multiple power systems so I can at least feel I've worked on something.

And if you don't want so many power systems, then use just one! You don't need all of them. Heck, you could even use none if you wanted.

I do use none, wasn't that you who called me out on the ZeroCraft server for not having any power sources?

The first mod to use power could have placed the power as open source so other mod creators could have used it.

The first real power system that existed was IndustrialCraft's EU. That was quite a while ago, and back then nobody even thought of large-scale mod interaction. Minecraft Forge didn't even exist. BuildCraft was unique with its "works with IndustrialCraft". And because there was no power API most mods introduced their own power system. Universal Electricity later tried to provide an API that wasn't specific to any mod, but nobody really bothered to make their mods compatible with it. Instead mods like Mekanism appeared and basically remade IC2 with UE. At least some mods provide "it works"-level compatibility with UE now. Such as GregTech.

Oh, and Mekanism's Universal Cables are awesome. They convert EU and MJ into UE when entering the cable, and automatically convert back to any of the three kinds when necessary.

PS:

fel, Guru Meditation is what this site says under certain internal errors. Apparently the web server software is doing that, have seen it on a few sites so far. No idea why exactly Guru Meditation though, probably some inside joke :P

You certainly had a BatBox and an RE-Battery, and I think a Generator.

Cause I didn't want to be wasteful with my ores, I used coal to charge a battery and then the battery to power the macerator.

I did have it wired up at one point but that refused to work...

  1. Wasteful? They're renewable. After a lot of toil and trouble, of course.
  2. Go learn.

erm, how exactly are ores renewable? Maybe with the MFR laser drill, but otherwise they are a finite resource.

He means with EE3 I'm sure, but EE3 doesn't work for all ores, just the Vanilla ones.

No, yeah, I meant the MFR Laser Drill.

I barely used MFR when I was on that server, knew too little about it at the time and was trying to learn more about Thaumcraft then.

New server will have me learning about Ars Magica... Anyone wanna learn with me? Apparently I need two more people to get through it as fast as possible lol
One for offensive spells, one for defensive, and one for tools.

I'll learn everything!

But yeah, I will.

Starting out will be pretty much impossible unless you've seen a mod review or the forum post. You need to do a very obscure thing that I'm sure 99.99% of people won't think to do.

Sure but what of the three will you learn first?
I think I am ok with learning Tools first and will share my Tools spells with you if you specialize in one of the other two (until that one is fully learned) and share with me.

I've seen mod reviews.
If I recall right it is find a pool of special water, then put a book in a frame... ???... PROFIT!

Anyways, back on topic.

Apparently RF is now the most widely used power type... with more cross-mod compatibility then any other. Or at least I think I read that somewhere. Can't seem to find it now. xD

But here's the page containing all the mods that use RF:
