HI! I've been playing vanilla SMP and trying FTB Unleashed exclusively in SP, and now I thought of trying SMP. However, when I'm playing SP my FPS drops to around 10-15 sometimes, and I would like to know if, by having a host doing all the server-computing and my PC only running the client, it would be more tolerable, around 30-40 FPS.
My specs:

  • Win7 Pro 64bit
  • Pentium Dual-Core T4300 @ 2.1GHz
  • 4GB Ram
  • nVidia GeForce 105m w/ 512 MB dedicated GDDR3 RAM
  • 500GB HDD, I think it's 5400RPM

Minecraft settings:

  • Render distance: Normal
  • Graphics: Max FPS
  • FTB allocated RAM: 2GB
  • No optifine, it made my client even more laggy

Also, with this specs, is it possible to recorde video using FRAPS or something?
Thanks!

Running a dedicated server on another machine probably won't help with FPS a lot, as they are mostly dependent on your computer's graphics power. It does help a little when your computer doesn't have to do all the other jobs, but your FPS probably won't improve too much.

If possible, you could look into upgrading your graphics card or adjusting your video settings a bit. Switching graphics from Fancy to Fast can help a lot, especially if you usually have many leaves in your view (e. g. forest or jungle). Turning down particles might also help.

And as strange as it may sound, turning down the Max FPS could also help. This setting internally controls the maximum number of frames that will be calculated, but in the end most monitors can only display 60 FPS anyway. Try setting it to Balanced, that way your graphics card won't try to achieve a high FPS and will instead stop at 120 or 60 FPS.

Oh, and you can probably forget about recording. Unless you have a decent framerate when not recording your computer probably won't manage to record at a good framerate.

Two things.

  1. If you want Optifine to give you good FPS, you have to select the correct version of it, and also change the settings to whatever suits best. There's Standard, Smooth and Multicore as one of the settings (if you're using the right version!), I think. You might want to play around with that some time.
  2. If you do upgrade your graphics card or something and you want to record, I would recommend DXTory over Fraps. DXTory doesn't reduce your FPS as much as Fraps, it has way more options and is overall better I think. Fraps is still good though.
