So ive been looking at this mod/addon called gregtech. I had it back in the ftb ultimate pack( I think) and i didnt really use it.

So, what are some pros/cons of it? Looks like it takes ic2 and buffs everything, almost. Should i add it? CAN i add it?

In theory you can add it, you may have to do some config modifying to get it working correctly.

As for the nerfs, some of the really annoying ones (e. g. only 2 planks per log) can be disabled in the configs, but it still introduces an entirely new tech tree for IC2. Before being able to make electric machines you have to go through the Bronze Age, which includes a bunch of IC2-like machines powered by steam. In the end you'll be able to make the Bronze Blast Furnace, which you need to make Steel and craft electric items.

Point is, with GregTech you generally progress much slower than without, but you also have access to a bunch of new machines, which in the end really pays off IMO.

 

Pro tip: the Bronze Blast Furnace takes forever to make Steel, and Railcraft's Blast Furnace can only make Steel from dust with GregTech installed. However you can also just put 4 Charcoal and an Iron Ingot into an Induction Smelter, which is MUCH faster.

The ability to use Induction Smelter to get steel. Although the recipe for Machine Frame itself now requires steel in lolpack

That still forces you to make a Bronze blast furnace for that steel, so it doesn't disrupt the flow of the game too terribly.

To be honest I find the 5 minutes per ingot a little too long... it would probably work out fine if you hook it up to an automated system on a multiplayer server, go to bed and come back tomorrow. But in singleplayer it is just too much to be usable in a reasonable amount of time, especially considering that you need two ingots per plate till you get the Plate Bending Machine.

By the way, the Induction Smelter recipe does also take longer than most others. Definetely much shorter than the Bronze Blast Furnace, but it is not as fast as e. g. a Redstone Furnace.

I think it'd be fine to use the bronze blast furnace for first steel, but otherwise really clunky for daily use. You can use a rolling machine from railcraft to get one plate per steel, but that also takes awhile to run.

As far as I can tell you need a bunch of steel though until you get the Industrial Blast Furnace, and since GT attempts to disable all other means of obtaining steel I assume that you are supposed to use the BBF all the time...

Yeah he wants you to use it the entire way up through the game like he's attempting to become a standalone mod.

 

TL;DR: The beginning game is such a pain now, but the end game pluses haven't changed. I'm beginning to believe gregtech isn't worth the work you put into it.

I have nearly a stack of steel from dungeon/village loot, so exploring is an alternative to the Bronze Blast Furnace.

 

In response to the OP: GregTech is included in the Universal Configs, so adding it to any of the 1.6 FTB packs should be easy. You'll still want to go through the configs and set everything to the difficulty you're looking for, since not everyone wants changes such as logs producing only 2 planks. If you're planning to play in a world for the long-term, GregTech gives some nice high-end machines, but getting to that point takes quite a while and a lot of resources.

 

And yes, it was included in Ultimate, but it was a lot less intrusive back then.

I read through this, and is there a way to change the steel types with like that one mod that cycles types of items through the different forge mods? the name escapes me.A whole new tech tree? What can i do?

Personally, I don't like the way it nerfs ic2, but it adds a lot of high tier endgame material.

And I personally do like the way it nerfs IC2; adds a bit more challenge.
