At the top, there's a big menu for subsets. Click that, find the mods menu, and shift-click on the mod you want.

Here are a few interesting things I've found out about the NEI search bar:
Because technically the @ method works because of NEI subsets, you can for example you can type @helmet and you'll get all headwear, or @panel to get all ForgeMultipart panels (because they have a subset). Creative tab names are also registered as subsets, and you could define your own ones in the NEI config.
Fun trick: you don't have to enter the entire name, for example @riz will give you Factorization, @kers will give you Tinkers' Construct and Mechworks.
When not using the @ symbol NEI searches the entire item tooltips, including WAILA's source mod display, which is why you can even search by mod name like that. Shortcuts like IC2 won't work in that case, you'll have to use either the full name or part of it. However without using the @ you can use regex for search, for example by typing "(buildcraft|pipe)" you'll find all items from BuildCraft and all items containing "pipe" from any other mod. One handy combo I use is "(pipe|gist)", which shows all pipes as well as all items from Applied Energistics and Logistics Pipes. Perfect for building logistics systems.
Do note though that in rare cases WAILA doesn't display the mod name for whatever reason, which will make it impossible to find these items by mod name without an @. This happens only with Logistics Pipes modules and a few GregTech items as far as I know, so it's not a big problem, but just keep that in mind.
[end lengthy explanation]

NEI is so awesome. I donate a couple of bucks every release, it is by far the most useful mod in ftb, or ever, imho.

If you're on 1.7, you need to use @mod.something, because NEI's subset search is not fully reimplemented yet. It might also be necessary to use correct capitalization ("@Mod.OpenBlocks" instead of "@mod.openblocks") but I'm not sure about that.
