Where are the Onions?

Ok this is nuts. Ive gone through a full stack of bone meal and not a single onion seed. At least 10 or more of just about everything else from clicking grass except Onion seeds. Am I dong something wrong? Been trying in a plains biome. Maybe in a different biome?

 

Any ideas other than just keep trying?

Ok 3 1/3 stacks of bone meal and almost 2 hours and I FINALLY got 1 onion seed. OMG that was a pain!
