I'm having trouble getting my Crafting Altar to work...

 

here's a pic of what I've made: I've built the Brick/Goldblock version as shown in the Arcane Compendium.

 

...and I'm just trying to make my first spell (touch-dig)

I can't seem to make it work.

 

I'm holding the spell book in the screenshot. I have all the components ready.

 

I put the book on the lectern... nothing happens? I chuck in the blank rune... nothing happens? I've seen Magic Police #6 so I know there's supposed to be white lights and stuff

 

What am I doing wrong?

 

..and can I swap out the brick bits with witchwood bit without having to change the gold blocks? I haven't been able to find anywhere that says i can't... but untill I can get this to work I don't want to experiment too much

I don't know much about the science of the placements of these things, but play swapping the places of the lever and the lectern.

Have you built a nexus?

putting the lever on the left and the lectern on the right had no effect

 

...I just really want to get into making spells

 

EDIT: I did not have a nexus set up.... working on that now

You're missing upside-down stairs on the level above the lever.

Funny, first time I made an altar I forgot those too. XD
