When i'm running this pack, i use the option to limit my memory usage to 5GB in the launcher, but when playing, it used 7gb no matter what my settings are. Does a mod enable a leak? I'm also getting rather flashy textures no matter the settings, and im not only playing off an SSD, but i have a GTX 970 w/ 4Gbs so i shouldn't have any problems with stability.

Any ideas?

It's not uncommon knowledge that Java uses more memory than it's given. It's just Java being Java.

1.6 modpack? Download Java 7 here. 1.7.10+? Download Java 8 here.

Fair enough, but what about the flickery textures? Sometimes, entire trees disappear for moments.

Just as a heads up, i did add optifine here. Not sure if any mods cause problems with it.

Yeah, Optifine tends to mess with things a bit.

Try turning off multi-core chunkloading in the Optifine settings, for me that's what causes these kinds of flickering issues. Although I'm a (not very) proud user of an Intel integrated graphics chip, which causes all sorts of weird graphics glitches that you wouldn't have otherwise.

As for Java memory usage, that is because what is usually referred to as the Java RAM [size] is only the heap, i. e. the RAM space used directly by Minecraft itself. There are other RAM spaces used by the JVM (Java Virtual Machine, the thing that runs Java bytecode) for things like storing compiled code, string caching, garbage collection, and whatever else Java needs to run programs. I wouldn't be surprised if LWJGL (the 3D graphics engine used by Minecraft) also reserves its own bit of RAM. 2 GB of additional RAM usage is a little much though... Have you tested what happens if you set the heap size to something lower (4/3/2 GB), does Java consistently use 2 GB on top of that?

I took optifine out, no issues yet. About to try without multi core loading. I understand it uses a lot of ram, E.G if you allocate 2gb it will always use all 2gb, one of the reasons no games are written in java..

Works just fine w/o multi core. No flickering, and it looks like the ram is fixed as well.

Optifine doesn't like mods.

I was going to see if anyone else was using optifine. It seems to work sometimes for me but other times it will only run at 1fps or be super glitchy and I have to close Minecraft and start it again.

Also, what kind of FPS are people getting? I have a pretty decent computer but I only get about 25-30 fps which is why I wanted to give optifine a try.

If you are going to wear a hat, you might as well wear a silly one :P

Its for the band Men Without Hats

Man I turned off the FTB setting or augments for fast computers and that doubled my FPS
