A question/poll regarding durability values. For those who are unaware, durability is the amount of damage an item can take before it is destroyed. It is a parameter of the Infobox/Item template.

My question is the following. Do we list the actual or "total" durability of an item? The value that is used internally in the game is the amount of damage from 1 to max, which an item can take. But technically the "total" durability is max+1, because when an item has no damage, essentially when no damage indicator is shown, you have 1 additional point. The durability value that is used in the game is only valid once the damage indicator is shown.

For example, leather boots have a durability of 65, but they are only destroyed after 66 damage has been dealt to them.

Minepedia lists the latter, durability+1, so I'm wondering what value we should use, hopefully we can reach a consensus on that, but I personally have no preference. I was considering to either list the durability+1 as is done on minepedia, or durability and add a postfix to the infobox label with something like "(+1)". But as I said, I don't really have a preference. I was hoping someone else might have a good argument to go for one or the other.

  • durability: The item's total durability, i. e. how often an undamaged item can be used until it breaks. For most tools this is the highest possible metadata value plus one. Default: Hidden.

How the durability is stored is a technical detail that doesn't affect players. What is important is how often the item can be used, not what the metadata number says. And not all tools' metadata corresponds exactly to their "used-ness" - Tinkers' tools for example all have a "maximum metadata" of 100 (or maybe 101) no matter what their actual durability is.

Well, it isn't so much about the meta value as it is about the actual durability, but that answers my question :) Add all the durabilities!

That is a lot of durabilities.
