Greetings, all!

My friends and I are using FTB Infinity (FTBI) 1.6.2 and I'd like to update us to the latest mod pack and add the latest Ars Magica and Galacticraft.  I love space and magic and look forward to zapping aliens with spells!

We've been playing on this server over a month now and would like to keep our progress.  What should we know about proceeding before we proceed?

These are specific topics of concern, though all relevant advice is welcome!

-How do we back up our JourneyMap waypoints besides manually transcribing them onto paper or into another digital document?

-How do we back up our server completely just in case?  Where are all the files on a Windows 7 machine?

-If we want to restore our old server after installing the latest FTBI and new mods (Galacicraft and Ars Magicka in this case), what should we do?

-If we want to restore our old client after this change, what should we do?

-Are there any conflicts in mods we should expect between FTBI 1.6.2 and Galacticraft?  What about Ars Magicka 2?

-I've heard that Biomes o'Plenty can generate odd biomes with other mods installed due to conflicting biome IDs.  I doubt our server uses the expanded biomes (though we do have an Enchanted Forest near our base, which seems new), but we definitely have the new plants and creatures due to Biomes o'Plenty.  Can we generate odd/invalid biomes due to adding Galacticraft and Ars Magicka 2 in after world generation?

-Are there any other very spiffy mods we should install while we're at it?

-Anything else relevant you wish to share?

Updating from Infinity v1.6.2 to Infinity v1.10.1 should not be too big a deal.

  • It looks like JourneyMap stores its waypoints in a file based on what server you join. These files are located in [FTB install location]\FTBInfinity\minecraft\journeymap\data\mp.
  • All files for the server should be located wherever you've saved the server start file. To backup just the world, you could simply make a copy of the \[worldname] folder (it will contain several .dat files, a "region" folder, and a "playerdata" folder, and folders for any dimensions, to name a few). To be able to roll back the server completely, though, I'd recommend making a copy of the entire folder containing the server start file (which will contain the "server.properties" file, a "mods" folder, a "config" folder, etc). You can just use Window's copy function to make a "Copy of [foldername]", and all relevant files will be safe there in case you need them to roll back.
  • If you need to roll back, and you followed the instructions in my last point, all you'd need to do is run the server from the backup. If you wanted, you could delete the folder with the updated server files and rename the backup folder, but it's not strictly necessary.
  • The same process for backing up the server can be followed on each client to save the current setup before updating. In this case, you'd want to make a copy of "[FTB install location]\FTBInfinity".
  • This, I don't know. I'd recommend making a backup of your client, and then going ahead and testing if the game will launch after adding the mods, before you try adding them to the server. If it fails to launch, and you can't decipher the crash logs, feel free to post the logs here and someone will try to help if they can.
  • I wouldn't be surprised if this update causes borders between new and old terrain (the classic cliffs you get even from updating a vanilla server when the terrain generator updates). As for conflicting biome IDs, I've never dealt with this problem. If the game fails to launch because the IDs conflict, that'll be an easy fix. Otherwise, you might want to look through the configs for the three mods and make sure nothing's overlapping, just in case.

As a final thought: if you need to make changes to configs to make the game launch with these new mods, take notes on what changes you make. This way, you can tell the other clients of the server exactly what they need to change (unless you plan to send them the modified config files, which is another solution).

Good luck!
