Can't get ftb minecraft to work,

Windows 10, latest java 8. Laptop core i7, nvidia 940m, 8gb ram 5gb ram minimum in settings

fresh download/install never played before on this computer

direwolf20 1.7 pack is what I'm aiming for, but none of the mod packs seem to work. Tried infinity and another 1.7 and even a random 1.6 and they all crash. Tried curse loader, it crashes too. However, no crash log.

Vanilla minecraft works fine

If you have 8GB on your system, allocating 5GB to FTB is way too much. Try 3 instead.
