So I'm looking to get in to FTB but there is so many modpacks that I have no idea where to begin or which one to choose. I'm a complete beginner when it comes to FTB but some of the mods in the packs I've played with individually.

Any help would be much appreciated!!!!

I say try the ultimate pack it has most/all the mods in it then as you play more you can see what ones you dont like.

it was how i started in ftb :)

Some suggestions, snipped due to sheer size. If you'd like to read my rambling, please feel free.

Spoiler

In terms of raw information about the packs:

Mindcrack and Ultimate have the most mods, but TrainCraft and EE3 can be a bit of an issue when switching between the two.

Beta Pack A and Retro SSP are vintage packs with outdated mod versions and experiences.

Direwolf20 and YogCraft (FTB Lite, to some extent, as well) are easier to work with due to sheer size and lack of GregTech, but have current versions of the mods.

Tech World and Magic World are more focused on tech/magic mods respectively, although you'll find a bit of magic in tech and vice versa.

The various third-party packs, which are defined by being not produced by the FTB team, offer very different experiences from pack to pack depending on which one you choose. Voxel and Brony are more focused on giving more tools for Creative-mode servers, so they're not good for actual gameplay. They differ greatly from the main thread (lots of tech and a bit of magic) that FTB Team's packs offer.

I wouldn't recommend Ultimate for a beginner, personally, as it has a lot of mods and can be quite overwhelming due to sheer size.

One last note: the size of a pack is proportional to its load time. No exceptions.

My username is digitallyApocalyptic. I contribute where I can on the wiki and I've previously built pretty much the entirety of Category:Twilight Forest. I play FTB Ultimate, some games on Steam, and I follow MS Paint Adventures.

Partly agree, some mods are more optimized than others, so you wont get a definite proportion, but i guess its close enough.

I would first ask myself "What do I want to do?" almost every pack is oriented around technology and magic, some more than others.

Do you want a mind-blowing amount of magic? RPG Immersion/Magic World modpack.

Do you want sheer technology? Ampz/Tech World modpack.

Do you want the most immense FTB experience? Ultimate modpack.

Do you want a small amount of new content to begin with? Lite modpack.

Do you want to mimic youtubers? Mindcrack/Direwolf20/Yogcraft modpack.

Do you want something completely new? New World modpack.

Bitten by ponies? Brony modpack.

Do you intend to create large natural objects instead of focusing on content? VoxelBox modpack.

Magic Farm is to new for me to categorize.

The remaining mods when this is written is either obsolete or was a part of an event in the past.

Saying Minecrack, Direwolf, and Yogcraft are only for imitating the creators show seems a bit shallow to me. I don't really like Gregtech so I use Direwolf because it has the most stuff without that mod, as I can't reliably find Ultimate servers with just that mod disabled.

True, but it works for generalizing the modpacks into categories for someone that don't have experience with them. There is more to each modpack of course, but it should help narrow down the choice.

HippieShaman didn't really say mindcrack, DW20 and yogcraft are 'only for imitating youtubers', just that if thats what you're after then you'll want one of them.
