I've heard it spawns below 3 layers of sand in desert biomes, but I've been branch mining sand for what feels like ages now and haven't found any. Has anyone actually found some railcraft Saltpeter in the 1.5 modpacks?

At least on Ultimate, it replaces sand in a desert biome. If you just run around on the desert, you're bound to find some. Not sure about in 1.5.

Hmm, when was Ultimate last updated? Here is the last mention of Saltpeter in the railcraft change log on January 30th.

  • CHANGE: Saltpeter world gen was completely rewritten.
    • Saltpeter now spawns in any hot and arid sandy biome.
    • It spawns one layer beneath the surface in large uncommon clusters (aka Caliche).
    • Saltpeter clusters will regenerate over time, provided there is still sand at the surface.

Oh so THAT's what the "Saltpeter Ore Spawner" block is for that I keep seeing in NEI!

Yup, I'm not sure if its actually visible or not as I've yet to find any Saltpeter, but apparently once you find a Saltpeter deposit, you can just recover the whole thing in Sand and the spawner will convert sand blocks back into Saltpeter.

So, I tried cheating a little bit by making sand blocks mostly transparent in a texture pack, but of course that just resulted in cave vision. I don't suppose there is any X-ray method to see what blocks are directly below a given block? I just want to find some so I can write the articles at this point. :P

You could try grabbing a Wand of Equal Trade, and exchanging large areas of sand for a transparent block, like glass. Not as quick as an x-ray-type vision, but should be faster than mining up sand to find it.

Ohhh... or if you have a wrath igniter, that would change a huge area of sand into glass.

Sadly I've not gotten that far into Thaumcraft on this world yet, and I think a Wrath igniter might be a bit more environmental destruction than I was hoping for.

Well I tried the wand of equal trade and glass method, but it appears even the wand of equal trade cannot collect glass. It just breaks the glass and replaces it with the given block. It would thus take more glass than I'm willing to use this method. Is there a mass produceable transparent block that the wand can recollect?

Ah, I'd assumed you were testing in a Creative world for Science!

Well, really I'd like to find some on my survival world to legitimately get some railcraft items that require it, but I guess if I really can't find any I might have to wreck a creative world like that. :P

Can you recollect Clear Glass or Reinforced Glass or Hardened Glass?

Reinforced glass is probably too expensive, I'll try clear glass. If anyone can confirm hardened glass, I guess that would justify making an automatic obsidian production line to obtain it.

Stained Glass (MineFactory Reloaded)?

Stained Glass (Forestry)?

Stained Glass Pane?

I had trouble finding it on the mindcrack pack, and finally realised that it was only in vanilla biomes. None of the extrabiomes deserts had any. As soon as I found a regular desert I found a small steep sided hill and voila, saltpeter all around it.

It does respawn, and fairly quickly too. I had a quarry/filler/chunkloader setup and very quickly had more than I ever needed, and I was making a lot of gunpowder for use in the implosion compressor to make iridium plates too.

Just tested:

Clear Glass, Clear Pane, Stained Glass (MFR) and Ethereal Glass all give back the block when mined with a fist.

Clear Glass and Stained Glass (MFR) both break instantly.

According to the changelog it should now spawn in any hot/dry biome regardless of which mod added it.

Thanks! Clear Glass works like a charm.

I did end up trying the Wrath Igniter method on a creative world. Turned a whole desert into glass but only found two Saltpeter deposits. Even with a wand of equal trade and clear glass, this will likely still be a real pain to find.

Back on 1.4.7 DW20 saltpeter was terrible to find, and I was just using it to craft Gunpowder for a friend if I remember right.

I don't really have much use for it now, but I do enjoy hoarding things.... will definitely be putting the WoET and wrath igniter (eee those are fun) suggestions to the test when I get the time.

Always wondered what that spawner did. If I plop one out in the world, will it generate like normal?

I don't think so..............

...but that's just a guess.

That water spring block doesn't create a water spring when placed...
