While playing on the monster pack, I started to research, and I couldn't put paper into the research table. I have no clue why this happened, but when I played on the magic pack 2 it worked fine.

These packs are running a different version of Thaumcraft (Monster has a newer version). Since Thaumcraft 4.1, you don't get research notes by putting paper in the research table, instead you put paper and a scribing tools in your inventory, and open your thaumonomicon. From there, you can select which discoveries you want to research - no more randomness! Clicking on an unresearched discovery will usually then put a Research Notes for that discovery into your inventory, which you can then take to the research table. Some discoveries (those with a hexagon icon) don't require the research minigame at all: when you click those, you "spend" research points directly and unlock the discovery instantly.
