They don't appear to be in the modpack? I find this odd - since all the other Buildcraft pipes are there.

NEI and even creative mode doesn't show them

Insertion Pipes are not a part of vanilla BuildCraft, they come from certain add-on mods (for example, they are added by Thermal Expansion in the Unleashed Pack). It appears that no mod implements Insertion Pipes in Ultimate, as Thermal Expansion did not have them in that version.

Since when did Themal Expansion include item pipes of any form? No mention of it on the thermal expansion wiki, nor the minecraftforum thread.

Additional Buildcraft Objects (and possibly others) add an insertion transport pipe, but I don't believe ABO is included in any FTB pack.

ABO should really be included in any pack with Buildcraft...

Well, I opened Unleashed and had NEI show me the Thermal Expansion subset, and there was the Insertion Transport Pipe, along with something called a Redstone Transport Pipe. Not sure why it would be undocumented, but it's certainly there.

Edit: The Redstone Transport Pipe emits a redstone signal whenever something travels through the pipe.

Edit 2: From the changelog, version 2.3.0.0: "Added: New BuildCraft Pipe: Insertion Transport Pipe. (Tin, Glass, Tin); Lapis Block on top."

Ok. Odd additions to make.

Ok. Odd additions to make.

If you see something needed why not add it I guess.

I found this mod here: http://www.minecraft...dcraft-objects/ - it adds the pipes I'm missing, like Insertion pipes, obsidian pipes

Will be interesting to see if it works with Ultimate...

and for the uninitiated:  http://tekkitlite.wi..._Transport_Pipe - its a crazy handy pipe: It'll try to put items passing through into a connected machine, BUT if there's no room it'll let the item pass on along the pipe... it's basic overflow prevention. You can't make good large automated machine setups without this.

...and sadly the mod I found linked above doesn't work with Ultimate :(

EDIT:

I tried updating to newer versions of Thermal Expansion (from 2.2.2.2. to 2.4) and Forge... managed to ruin my map completely - didn't think to make backups

Great. Ruined four weeks of grinding, making ludicruisly expensive Gregtech machines... hell, I was just about to set up my first quarry

I could cry right now

Insertion pipes also have the nice feature that items just turn around rather than popping onto the floor when they reach the end of the line.

ABO has many other pipes that should be mandatory for any BC user, such as a diamond fluid pipe to ensure you don't get water in your refinery.

"managed to ruin my map completely - didn't think to make backups"

Thats where using NEI to just gift yourself all the key stuff you think you had comes in.

As you've found, it is always a good idea to backup before updating any mods. Reading the changelog for mods is also advised. E.g. one of the updates to Thermal Expansion caused the loss of all TE liquids, and similarly for oil in Buildcraft. A Traincraft update caused all trains to disappear unless they were stored in 'item form' in a chest. All these side-effects were mentioned in the changelog/update notes.

What exactly happened with your map? It may be fixable. Is it corrupted, or just that you've lost all sorts of stuff?

I love the way you say "ludicrously expensive Gregtech machines... quarry". When I first started with GT I thought the same too; I mean having to build a blast furnace and industrial electrolyser just for two titanium for the drill seemed insane. Now, after having just completed my fusion reactor all the rest of the GT changes and "expensive" machines seem inconsequential.
