So I've been encountering this problem in a lot of modpacks, but now it even crops up in a modpack that it should work in (as I've seen it played). Using the Thaumometer, you should normally be able to acquire all aspects by scanning anything you come across. The way it works as far as I know is that you can acquire new aspects if you have their 2 component aspects already discovered.

Now, I've been having a bit of a problem with this. First, the Life aspect, which consists of Aqua and Terra aspects. even when I have both of them, I cannot scan anything that has life in it, as it says "you need to study the nature of life" or some such, depending on the modpack.

I managed to fix this particular issue by scanning an ethereal essence spawned in from creative mode, but I've now run into the same problem with the Death aspect (Mortus), and scanning Ethereal Essences doesn't seem to work at all.

I believe there are a bunch more aspects waiting to give this same problem in my game, I just havent been able to confirm them yet.

If anyone knows how to fix this permanently, I would appreciate it!

This sounds like something only the dev of Thaumcraft would be able to answer, sorry.

What happens when you craft the components of Life together?

As far as I know no crafting is required, and it has not been for any other aspects. I just need to acquire them. If crafting turns out to be required, I'll feel stupid :P.

No no crafting is not required normally, but you can craft aspects together to make more aspects, I find that that is the easiest way to collect unknown aspects myself lol

I sit with the List of Aspects article open and I just craft every unknown aspect so they become known to me.

The items you are trying to scan probably have other aspects you can't learn yet.  And if you don't have the capacity to discover even one aspect on an item, you can't scan it, even if you could learn all the others.

I do that too xD It's just too easy...

Aspect List just be careful, several aspect combinations for a couple versions are on there, make sure you use the right one.

1.6 modpack? Download Java 7 here. 1.7.10+? Download Java 8 here.

Since this has not been marked as answered yet, I'll throw in my two cents.

I have only found one source of victus that does not have later aspects on it (either corpus or sensus, in most cases). This is Wispy essence. Unfortunately, you can only scan one type, and victus essence is incredibly rare. I've found you have to either break open a pure node, hoping to find the right kind, or create a ecuilidaisy (or however the heck that's spelled), give it a whole bunch of mana, and hope for the right kind.

The second option requires Forbidden Magic and Botania. If you're going that route, you may want to also make a whisperweed to turn mana straight into research points. Both flowers can be turned off with a redstone signal.
