Hi guys,

I've been working on an automated tree farm in FTB ultimate for quite some time now. Only now I don't know which tree to use in my farm. I use a disposer/assembler to plant the sapling and apply bonemeal, and block breakers to harvest the wood. All saplings that come out are returned to the transposer and the wood is placed in a barrel. The farm is shown in this pic:

When I use vanilla trees, they won't grow because of the block breakers standing in the way. The only tree that will grow is the rubber tree from IC2, only due to some kind of bug (which I also found using google, it is not just this server) the rubber trees wont accept bonemeal from my assembler. Does anyone know what tree I can use, or some other way to work around this?

thanks for reading

I think you'll have to use frames to move the blockbreakers in when you harvest. But I'm wondering why you're not using Forestry tree farms?

Which frames? In the wiki,  can only find Quarry frames and beehive frames. Can you explain that?

for the forestry version: I have never seen this tree farm. Do you know a tutorial?

thanks anyway

  1. It's the Frame Motor he's talking about.
  2. For Forestry, you would use an Arboretum and a Logger to make an automatic tree farm, along with some engines.

I (or someone else) might make a tutorial on the Wiki about Tree Farms soon. It would be linked here if we did!

I used to have tree farms set up using the block breakers, transposers and deployers. But now I use the Forestry mod for automated tree farming. It's far less complicated, and much more efficient at collecting and storing the tree parts.

There's also the new Multifarm forestry machines, which I guess will eventually replace the old forestry farms. I prefer the old loggers myself but I multifarms do not use diamonds, and you need fertilizer for tree farming with either method.

Multifarms do seem to take a lot of tin though.

The Logger is great - it has a huge range and is totally portable when combined with Redstone Energy Cells and a chest.  I don't care for the Arboretum because it takes a lot of crafting + supplies to get Humus, which is a pain, but the Logger itself just needs MJ power.  That deployer/bonmeal setup would work really nicely with a Logger, since it will auto-chop any trees in range, and pick up all the wood/saplings, storing them in a chest for you.

Well, I tried out the forestry tree farm, only now I found another problem: my electrical engine does not power the logger and arboretum. I connected it to a power source from IC and gave it a redstone signal. The engine works (the power level goes up and down) but it wont go through the conductive pipes, as seen below:

What am I doing wrong here?

EDIT: whoops, I forgot the wooden cond. pipe

Note: most (all? possibly all except send/receive machines such as a Redstone Energy Cell) machines can't receive power from a wooden conductive pipe, which means you're probably going to want another block of distance between the engine and the machines if your current setup isn't clearing the trees properly.

You need a wooden conductive pipe immediately beside the engine, then the two gold conductive pipes.

An annoying feature of buildcraft is the necessity to use wooden pipes to extract energy from your engines.

Also, you can add a forester to apply fertilizers and grow your trees faster.

edit: Oh sorry, missed your edit saying you'd put the wooden pipe in...
