I wonder what actually makes wither skeleton heads drop...

I've tried making a wither skeleton spawner and letting them die from fall damage. No heads.

I've tried making them die by iron golems. No heads.

Do I have to kill them myself specifically with a sword? Or maybe they don't drop heads because I'm using a soul cage spawner?

Does anyone know?

I think you have to kill them. The vorpal enchantment really helps.

The vorpal enchantment doesn't actually affect wither skeletons. It's more for getting heads for decorations.

I've created a more sophisticated mob kill spawner now that pushes them into a small space where I can kill them manually. And now I got a head. So yeah, you will have to kill them manually and using a soul cage spawner makes no difference to naturally spawned wither skeletons.

I don't know about the Vorpal enchantment. The wiki says it has no effect on wither skeletons. Are you sure you've seen an effect hunting wither skeletons?

I'm going to test it right now...

I haven seen an effect, but I suspect there should be one. Many people use looting swords on them and hope for increased drops. They just dont want to find out that it would have helped them, but they didnt use it.

There's definetely no significant effect. I've created a Vorpal X enchanted sword with NEI's cheat mode. It gives me plenty of heads on the usual mobs, but it doesn't with wither skeletons.

Also I've run my soul cage spawners for a little longer and the fall death one gives me no heads. I suspect the iron golem kills won't make the wither skeles drop any heads either.

So if you want to farm their heads efficiently, you'll have to create a suffocation mob spawn that leaves you with one-kill wither skeles or just use one without a suffocation contraption if you can afford highly enchanted swords.

Given the fact that you can easily combine any Tier 5 soul shard with a 1-kill-soul-shard on an anvil (costs 11 enchantment levels to make) it should be a piece of cake to get your nether stars. Well, if you can deal with the withers...

Can you make wither spanwers?

I wouldn't see why not. If it is possible to have more than one of a type of mob, than you should be able to make a spawner.

So I can get a tier five spawner by killing skeletons, then kill a wither and combine the two for total chaos inside a room of indestructible warded glass.

I haven't been following Direwolf, but I saw one of his recent videos and I saw he had more than 5 stacks of Wither Skeleton Heads.

Maybe you could find a video where he talked about them.

Don't quote me on this but I'm 90% sure if you put a skele spawner in the nether it becomes a skele + wither skele spawner. It'll spawn both Skeletons and Wither Skeletons but I could be mistaken, that's just what I've seen on videos.

This is correct. I don't know if it works for Soul Cage things though.

I know it works for regular spawners though.

From what my brother was saying, Vorpal doesn't raise your chance of a head from withers, but looting does. Maybe they keep it in their wallets.

I think if you use attack turtles they still drop their head. That might have been what Direwolf was using.

Yes, they do drop heads with attack turtles.

That is what Direwolf20 used in his (and I believe he pastebinned the codes, though I'm not huge on turtles so don't ask me how to get it)

The requirements for them to drop a skull is to believe another entity attacked them. Player, turtle, and probably even golems.

A turtle is considered a player by the code, I believe.

You should be able to use deployers with mining lasers in them too. It works for collecting blaze rods.
