As discussed here, it is probably time to reach a consensus on how to deal with items from different mods that can be used interchangeably with forge's ore dictionary.

Basically, we can either have a separate page for each mod that, says, adds silver ore, or we can try and merge them all into one article.

As I see it, here are the pros and cons, and I'm sure there will be more that I haven't thought of.

Pros

  • Less Duplication of Effort
  • More Comprehensive Articles
  • No need to have Disambiguation pages.

Cons

  • Items that are in the ore dictionary in one modpack/version may not be in others, which will create confusion.
  • Harder to document items that are interchangeable but may still have slightly different properties beyond recipes.

Okay, here's my opinion - we should merge all items that have the same name AND are Ore Dictionary-compatible. Such as Iron Dust, which I recently merged. It is less confusing (at least for me) to have a single page state what mods an item is in, rather than multiple pages documenting the same item from different mods. After all, we don't separate different mods' Copper, do we? That would be quite a mess.

What I'm not quite sure about is if we should also merge articles for exchangeable items that do NOT have the same name, such as Iron Dust and Pulverized Iron. Although I wouldn't have a problem with that, I'm not quite sure how we could handle it. Redirect all names to the most common one perhaps?

The main advantage of merging the articles in my opinion is that users have all of the information in a single spot, which is obviously an advantage. The downside for sure is the clutter, so I propose we implement a way of allowing the user to filter information based on a specific mod(pack) there for sure.

Personally up to now I've always been a supporter of having separate pages and then have an ore dictionary template or something like that'd link to a disambiguation page.

After all, we don't separate different mods' Copper, do we?

That was the original intention.

For the third (and don't worry it is now the last) time, I suggest this:

Well... there IS always my suggestion...

Not only that, but ANOTHER wiki has started using those spoiler hiding tabbers.

Tabbers so that people can switch between different versions for one article.

Yes, that's what we would all like to have. If we were to use templates to separate an entire article's content that would be quite complicated, so having some kind of plugin to manage such things would be better.
Also it wouldn't really help us with managing ore dictionary items.

idk if it would be that complicated...

Sure it may be confusing to a newb editor but it is pretty straightforward if you take a step back and look at it for a moment.

No, what I mean is that it would be impractical to put an entire article in such a tab thing using a template, because parts of the article will be identical, no matter what version. If we wrapped entire articles in such templates we would have a bunch of duplicate content.

If we have articles for each version we would have more duplicate content...

It sounds like we will have duplicate content either way, except with tabbers we have less articles.
