Okay - so, I'm currently bunked up in a Magical Forest biome, while I gather resources and do work on my underwater biodoughnut (my mini-map looks like I'm recreating CERN.  ;D )  Literally next door is a patch of Taint in an Eerie biome, kept in check by the Silverwood trees - but the more I have to look at it, the more I want to get rid of it completely.  I'm doing the research to get the Ethereal Blooms, but I'm wondering if there is a danger to just charging in and punching out the Tainted node.  Will this make it easier to 'cure' it later with Silverwood trees and Ethereal Blooms?  Should I try draining it instead?

While I'm hardly an expert on taint removal, I always destroy the nodes in Obsidian totems as soon as I see them to prevent the Eerie biome from spreading. Note that you'll still need to remove any taint that is there, but the effects from the node itself will stop spreading.

Now I'm curious, is there any way to remove the Eerie biome again after it has spread? And is there any reason to keep the nodes in the totems? I suppose they still contain essentia.

As I understand it, the Eerie biome is different from Taint (Eerie has a dark cast to the grass/trees/greenery, while Taint is viney and purple).  I suppose if you're going for the research on the final 'tab' of the Thaumnomicon, you'd want to scan/harvest the essentia from that area, but I'd just as soon have to travel a fair distance in order to find it.

You can transform eerie biomes into a magical forest biome with the use of pure nodes such as the ones that spawn in silverwood trees. I don't believe there's a way to turn it back to the original biome though.

There's no side-effects from punching a tainted node to death, though I personally prefer to capture the nodes and save them (though I've never actually used them). Keep in mind that you need some of the "Taint" aspect to create your Ethereal Blooms, so it would be a good idea to have some tainted goo in stock before destroying the node. You do need to remove the tainted node before your ethereal blooms will be able to clear all the taint.

As far as I've seen, there's no correlation between Eerie and Tainted, any overlap is purely coincidental. Eerie biome won't spread more than ~15x15 around the Sinister node found in those obsidian totems.

Eerie biome can be removed by Ethereal Blooms, just like Taint biome. They also work to restore Magical Forest biomes to whatever the default biome was, if you're so inclined. Personally, I see no reason to destroy the totem nodes, unless you need ethereal essence quickly or don't want a small square of eerie biome.

By the time I'm able to get the research, I imagine there will be a fair amount of goo to be gotten.  And there are other patches of Taint that I've come across in my travels, including an ugly mass that one of my server-mates decided would be 'fun' to live in/near without precautions.   If not for the existing Magical Forest biome, I would have kept looking for a different bit of ocean-front realty.
